MINNESOTA-BASED U.S. EWHA TO HOST 2004 POWERHOCKEY™ CUP.
MINNEAPOLIS , Minnesota [ July 27, 2004 ] - North America's best wheelchair hockey teams and players are coming to Minnesota for the PowerHockeyT Cup. The event takes place Monday August 2nd through Thursday August 5th , 2004 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis . Opening Ceremonies will take place Monday at 6:30 pm in Augsburg College 's S.I. Melby Hall gymnasium. KARE-11 television sportscaster Eric Perkins will host the ceremonies and St. Paul mayor Randy Kelly will make an appearance. Games begin Tuesday and will be played in the same location.
The Toronto Rock return to defend the title it won at the 2001 PowerHockeyT World Cup. Two other teams from the 2001 tournament (Minnesota Stars, 4th place and Minnesota Saints, 9th place) return in an attempt to win the PowerHockeyT Cup. Both teams have high hopes after improving its rosters. The Carolina Fury rounds out the field as it makes its tournament debut. 2001 Tournament MVP Chris Kram (Minnesota Stars) and Championship Game MVP Michelle Duboulay (Toronto Rock) will both be returning to lay claim to the PowerHockeyT Cup.
The event is being hosted by the Minnesota-based U.S. Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association (U.S. EWHA), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a quality hockey program for persons requiring the use of an electric (power) wheelchair during daily life. The 2004 PowerHockeyT Cup also marks the first official event of the North American PowerHockeyT Association (NAPHA), a joint venture of the U.S. EWHA and Canadian Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association (CEWHA). The purpose of NAPHA is to develop a strong working relationship between all developed power wheelchair hockey programs throughout North America and abroad. NAPHA members will work together to form the future for PowerHockeyT tournaments; setting North American standards for rules, equipment, tournament play, tournament organization/planning and most importantly ONE Championship CUP all players dream to win someday.
